The Jugendstil town

Architecture shaped by sea, fjord and mountains.

Ålesund’s towers, ornamented façades and winding streets rise from a rugged landscape shaped by sea, fjord, mountains and weather. It is this meeting of richly detailed architecture and dramatic surroundings that gives the town its distinctive character.

The town rebuilt after the fire of 1904 is now covered by municipal conservation provisions. In addition to Ålesund Church, which is governed by separate regulations, eleven buildings are considered of such national cultural significance that they are listed by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
